Why Teach Green Building?
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, buildings account for nearly 40% U.S. energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Green building integrates environmentally preferable practices into building design, construction, maintenance, and demolition. The widespread adoption of green building criteria, such as the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, will greatly reduce the environmental impact associated with the consumption of water, energy, and raw materials from commercial and residential building sectors. In addition to protecting human health and our environment, green building will be an engine for economic growth and job creation long into the future.

Build a Pizza Box Solar Oven (Grades K-9) — Teach kids about solar energy by harnessing power from the sun to heat up a favorite treat! (US Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy)
Analyzing Your School's Energy Consumption (Grades 9-12) — With this activity obtained from PBS, students can learn to define attributes of an energy efficient "green" school. Also, students will learn to identify areas of energy waste in their school by comparing their school to that of a LEED certified school, identifying areas that are within the school's capacity to change, and auditing the school's recycling program.
You in the Workforce: Making Your Green Job (Grades 9-12) — This EPA provided activity allows students the opportunities to be able to recognize and reflect upon the fact that all jobs can be “Green," to be able to identify green business practices, and to verbalize how they can bring value to their job and their employer through green business practices.
Alternative Energy Resources (Grades 10-12) — This activity is designed to introduce students to the resources that provide energy for society. Students will define renewable and non-renewable, and then debate the pros and cons of the energy resources in both categories. Students will work together in a group of four and present a summary to the class.
